Camping in October in Switzerland’s mountains is always a hit-or-miss thing. We had hoped to circle Chamossaire, the prominent peak right in front of our windows in Leysin. But the campsites were covered in 10cm of fresh, wet snow. Not ideal for a crew of camping newbies, many from such warm-weather home countries as Mexico. So we switched plans to hike just under the snowline, which provided a cold night but plenty of warm smiles when the sun showed up in the morning. A record 24 students joined this last “Practice Journey” of the fall, with six completing their Silver Qualifying Journeys. Added to our previous practice journey in September, we should have about 30 students going for their Qualifying Journeys next May. Stay tuned for the excitement to come!
